Chapter Breaks: Skip Past the Waiting
SagaBound's new chapter breaks let you skip ahead to the next moment that matters. How they work, why we built them, and what else changed.
Chapter breaks are a new way to move a long story forward. When a scene has wrapped up, or your story is waiting on something days away, you can skip ahead to the next moment that matters and start a new chapter there. The narrator may offer one at a natural pause, and you can ask for one any time from the game menu.
Why we built it
Long sagas have quiet stretches. The plan is made and the heist is three days out. The war council has ended and the army marches at dawn. In a novel, this is where the author writes "Three days later" and moves on. Our narrator had no such move. It kept describing the waiting: one more evening at the inn, one more check of the gear, one more conversation that went nowhere.
When a scene stalls for long enough, the game nudges the narrator to make something happen. That keeps stories from freezing, but in a quiet stretch it sometimes meant a twist nobody asked for, just to fill the time. The better answer is to let you skip the time instead.
We also looked at adding story endings, and chose chapters instead. A SagaBound story has no fixed last page, and what a quiet stretch usually needs is not an ending but a way past the part with nothing in it. A chapter break gives you that, and the story keeps going on the other side.
How it works
- The offer. When the narrator sees a natural pause, a card appears under the turn: "This feels like a good place for a chapter break." It suggests where to skip to. Change the wording if you want the story to land somewhere else, then choose Skip ahead, or Stay here to keep playing in the moment. After Stay here, the narrator waits a while before it asks again.
- Asking for one yourself. Open the game menu, choose Skip ahead, and say where the story should pick up, like "the night of the heist" or "the next morning at the docks". Typing the same thing into Talk to the DM offers to open it for you.
- The skip. It is a normal story turn. The narrator writes a short bridge over the time that passed, then opens the new scene where you asked. A divider marks the start of the chapter, like "Chapter 2 · 3 days later", and the story clock moves forward by up to 30 days.
- Not mid-fight. You cannot skip ahead during a fight or while a Tabletop roll is waiting. Finish the moment first, then skip.
What the narrator knows
A time skip only helps if the story treats it as one. Left alone, a language model reads the last scene it was shown as the moment just before now, and will happily carry on a conversation that ended days ago. So the skip is written into what the narrator reads. Turns before the break are marked as the past, the narrator's running memory of your story is refreshed at the break, and every later turn is told which chapter it is in.
The bridge is kept quiet on purpose. Nothing big happens off screen: no deaths, discoveries or decisions you did not make. Wounds heal only as much as the bridge shows. Three days in a safe house can mean real rest. Three days on the run may not.
Also in this release
- Long stories remember better. The narrator keeps a running memory of your story so it does not have to reread every turn. On long sagas that memory could get stuck on older events. It now keeps updating as you play.
- Your corrections stay in force. Fixes you make through Talk to the DM now reach the narrator on every memory setting, including in long stories.
- Fewer false twists outside English. A check meant to stop stories going in circles misread German and other languages, and pushed the narrator to change direction when nothing was wrong. It now reads those languages properly.
- Inventory fixes. Money you find in a pouch you carry now reaches your coins, and putting away or reading an item you already hold no longer adds a second copy.
- Stricter safety checks. When a turn is stopped for breaking our content rules, it now leaves the screen and your words come back, so you can take the story another way. Scene images get the same checks.
- Android. The Action box no longer goes blank after switching modes, the app no longer gets stuck on Loading account, and when a new version is ready on Google Play the app asks you to update before you play. These arrive with the next Android update.
Every change is listed in the changelog.
Thank you
The missing pouch money and the blank Action box both came straight from player reports. Each one described what was happening when it broke, which is what let us find the cause quickly. Keep them coming: rate a turn, use Talk to the DM, or reach a person on the contact page.
